Transforming Paper into Possibility: Syuhadah Yaacob’s Growing Artistic Practice

For Syuhadah Yaacob, growth as an artist began with the freedom to experiment. When she joined ILTIZAM Seni Cycle 2/2024, she was eager to develop her practice and challenge the way she worked with materials. The residency provided the resources, mentorship and supportive environment needed to turn that ambition into progress.

Throughout the programme, Syuhadah engaged with mentors, visiting artists and fellow residents who encouraged her to examine her work from different perspectives. These exchanges helped her think more critically about her creative process, while interactions with artists from diverse backgrounds broadened her understanding of contemporary practice.

“I truly appreciated the funding of all art materials. It allowed me to research and experiment more deeply with pulp paper techniques, giving me the confidence to test ideas, refining methods and develop my work more ambitiously. ILTIZAM Seni also made me realise how important networks are for emerging artists. As new artists, we connected with fellow practitioners, galleries, collectors, and industry stakeholders. These relationships can lead to collaborations, visibility and opportunities that continue beyond the duration of the residency,” Syuhadah said.

Since completing the programme, Syuhadah has participated in notable exhibitions, including Old School x New Rules at Galeri PETRONAS, ASEAN Art and Textile at Cult Gallery, and an exhibition with Sareng Gallery at MITEC. She has also been invited to conduct workshops, allowing her to share her process and introduce pulp paper art to wider audiences. Most significantly, she has been given the opportunity to stage a solo exhibition. Her story shows how ILTIZAM Seni provides emerging artists with confidence, support and platform to take the next step in their careers.
