School Support Programme

The School Support Programme started in 2013 when we assisted a school located in the vicinity of our office – Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Lanjan (Asli) in Damansara Perdana, which provides primary education to Orang Asli children from the Desa Temuan community. Our aim was to create a conducive environment for everyday discovery and learning, where the children may grow and discover their true potential. In the first year, two projects were undertaken to assist the students. The first project was the sponsorship of after-school tuition classes whereby students from Standard Four to Standard Six were tutored in Bahasa Melayu, English and Mathematics. The second project was targeted at inculcating a reading habit among the among the Orang Asli students by improving their school library.

The results were encouraging and in 2016, we formalised our commitment to the school by partnering with Khazanah Nasional Bhd’s PINTAR Foundation (PINTAR) and officially ‘adopt’ the school. Later in 2018, we adopted our second school, Sekolah Kebangsaan Tun Abdul Razak (SKTAR) in Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor. Also another school that provides primary education to Orang Asli within the district.

Being part of PINTAR allows us to utilise their modular framework to holistically develop the teachers and students. We are also looking to leverage on PINTAR’s expertise, experience, network and resources to improve the overall standard of our adopted schools and the teaching skills among its teachers through assessment and monitoring of the school’s performance. We work closely with PINTAR to tap on their network at the Ministry of Education as well as be involved in any events conducted by PINTAR to provide exposure for the pupils.

Ahmad Fadlie Hadi Mohd

362km away from his hometown, Dungun, Hadi started his first-ever professional working experience in the heart of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. He was selected to undergo the one-year on-the-job training under Ekuinas’ ILTIZAM Professional Development Programme (PDP) and was placed at one of ILTIZAM PDP partner companies, FashionValet as Software QA, Executive Trainee. Hadi graduated from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) with a Bachelor (Hons) of Technology Management (Innovation Technology).

“The first three months of work were difficult. I struggled to adapt to the work environment and my communications skills really set me back. At times, I felt as if I was slowing the team down as I had to learn things from the ground up. I felt like giving up.

“Thankfully, the persistent support and mentoring from the ILTIZAM team and coaches were really helpful for me to improve myself and the situation. One of the advices that I took to heart was to stop assuming about people and be bold with anything that comes your way. Also, the programme’s modules such as problem-solving skills, developing soft skills and communication skills equipped me to build a solid foundation which elevated my self-confidence,” explained Hadi.

Looking back at the year, there were many achievements that he was proud of but one stood out the most. He was entrusted to represent his company in a meeting with two other representatives from China and Russia to discuss a potential project collaboration. To top it off, that project is now a reality.

“Do not be afraid of anything. No doubt there are a lot of negative outcomes that you could be afraid of, but there are also a lot of positive outcomes that you can look forward to,” shared Hadi on what his advice would be for fresh graduates.

Hadi graduated from the one-year programme with Distinction. He was also awarded ILTIZAM PDP 2020’s Best Trainee. Before the programme ended, he was offered a permanent position at FashionValet as Software QA, Executive.

Mohamed Thavupik Pakkiri Mohamed

As the Special Assistant to President and Chief Executive Officer of a public-listed company, University Malaya graduate Thavupik has ILTIZAM’s Professional Development Programme (PDP) to be thankful for in his career development.

“What I learnt during PDP were a lot of soft skills and personal development topics that has served me very well in my current job. I am certain that the programme has enhanced my employability by so much more,” said this Negeri Sembilan native.

Among the topics he was trained on while undergoing the one-year PDP included communications, presentation skills, critical thinking and various types of coaching.

“For me personally, the PDP is like a bridge between university and working environment life. It had felt like transition phase for me before I entered the real professional work environment,” he said. His advice to young graduates as well as future PDP candidates is to embrace the English language.

“From my experience, mastery of the language, or at least a good command of it, would go a long way in helping one to join any workforce. My grip of the language has also enabled me to view my duties in a macro and micro perspectives. This outlook has also enabled me to understand and appreciate how I can contribute further.”

Mohd Amirul Hafiz

After scoring with flying colours in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Mohd. Amirul Hafiz decided to pursue the subject of Microbiology at a local university. By the 4th semester, however, the subject no longer captivated this former Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Syahbandaraya pupil.

Not wanting to give up studying, and encouraged by his father, Amirul decided to opt for maritime studies. And as chance would have it, the Malaysian Maritime Academy (Akademi Laut Malaysia – ALAM) was offering such an opportunity at that time. Amirul applied for the chance and was accepted to join ALAM in 2012.

Throughout his studies at ALAM, Amirul underwent a full-time industrial training as a deck cadet officer attached to Icon Offshore Berhad (ICON), one of Ekuinas’ portfolio companies. He did so well in his studies that he was chosen to receive a scholarship to pursue higher education in the Certificate of Competency Class 3 Watch Keeping Officer Unlimited. The scholarship was being offered to Amirul under the Oil & Gas Marine Training and Development Programme under ILTIZAM. The latter is Ekuinas’ Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.

“When I heard that many of my friends were still struggling to get jobs, I believe that I have made the right call to switch my field of study to maritime. Now I find that the job opportunities are aplenty. One just have to work hard at this field,” said Amirul who hails from Shah Alam, Selangor.

After successfully completing his cadetship, Amirul managed to secure a Junior Second Officer post at Icon Offshore. He knew that from that moment on, he has set his eyes on becoming captain of a ship, a mountainous target but one he is ready to spend his life pursuing.

So far Amirul has completed two out of five phases of an 8-year course, organised by ICON Offshore. The programme is part of an initiative by ICON and Ekuinas to unearth more local talents to fill up various management positions in the maritime industry.
